Nutmeg Grater - Nutmeg-shaped - Birmingham 1868 by Hilliard & Thomason - 4cm long; 19g - LC/4714

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a rare, novelty silver nutmeg grater in the form of a decorated nutmeg with alternate panels of chased foliate and plain decoration.

Opening up the nutmeg reveals an original steel rasp that is hinged so that the grated spice can be retrieved. It was made in Birmingham by the innovative partnership of John Hilliard and John Thomason and has a full set of hallmarks to the lip of the rim. Hilliard & Thomason are known for their interesting range of mid-Victorian, novelty nutmeg graters that includes strawberries, pears, acorns and shells. This example is in fine overall condition.
