Vinaigrette - Engraved Rectangle with HMS Victory Grille - Birmingham 1814 by Matthew Linwood - 3.1cm x 2.4cm; 16g - TG/5407
This is a very rare George III period silver vinaigrette made to commemorate Nelson's victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.
The front cover of this rectangular vinaigrette is engraved with diaper work and centred by a vacant, rectangular cartouche and the underside with a flower head motif. Opening the hinged cover reveals the true joy of this piece - a hinged silver-gilt grille with a scene of HMS Victory facing left, and embossed 'Victory' and 'Trafalgar Octr 21 1805'. This vinaigrette would most likely have been produced to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Nelson's famous naval victory.
This vinaigrette was made by the top Birmingham box maker Matthew Linwood with hallmarks spread between the top and base to the inside. The interior retains its original gilding and although there is a small amount of minor scratching/pitting from use to the inside, the piece remains in excellent condition with secure hinges.
