Vinaigrette - Anchor Decorated Grille - London 1808 by Samuel Davis - 3.5cm x 2.5cm; 21g - TR/4566
This is a rare and interesting George III period silver vinaigrette with a Royal Navy theme.
The exterior of this rectanglar box is engraved with a diaper pattern and centred by script initials "AJ". The hinged cover opens to reveal a pierced and embossed silver-gilt grille decorated with an anchor amongst seaweed. The whole of the interior is gilt with a full set of hallmarks to the base and part marks to the lid.
Made in London by Samuel Davis, this box was produced to capitalise on the public's appetite for naval related silver in the wake of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar in 1805. The viniagrette is in excellent condition.
