Wine Label - Mountain: Shaped-Rectangle with Feather Edge - London circa 1770 by Margaret Binley - 5.2cm wide; 13g - TW/4895</p>
This good-looking silver wine label was made by the specialist bottle ticket maker and lady silversmith, Margaret Binley. It is typical of the early 1770's in design with an interesting shape and chased feather-edge border. The reverse side displays two very clear examples of her "MB" maker's mark and the label is in fine condition throughout.
Mountain is a sweet dessert wine from the hills around Malaga in Spain and was the predecessor of Sherry in the UK, being replaced by the latter circa 1790.
An identical Madeira label by the same maker can be seen in "Wine Labels 1730 -2003" as figure 524.
