Rattle - Coral, Bells & Whistle - London 1802 by Thomas Wallis - 16.5cm; 58g - CJ/8074

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a large and beautifully decorated Georgian silver child's rattle with a coral teether to one end, original bells on two tiers to the centre and a whistle to the other. The coral had the dual purpose of soothing aching gums and the believed properties of warding away evil spirits. The silver is elegantly decorated throughout with an engraved design - even the bells are engraved. The whistle section has a swivel loop for attaching to a ribbon or chatelaine and is engraved with original script initials. The maker's mark is located on the whistle too with the other marks to be found adjacent to the coral. This baby's rattle is in fine condition with just a couple of small blemishes.
