Marrow Scoop - Double-ended - Dublin circa 1775 by John Pittar - 22.5cm long; 61g - DL/5728

This is a fine quality Irish silver marrow scoop with a nice weighty feel in the hand.

Made in Dublin by John Pittar, this double-ended scoop bears an original engraved crest featuring a wolf rampant and surmounted by the coronet of a baron. Marrow scoops were used to tease out the tasty morsels from marrowfat bones - a tasty delicacy during the 18th century.

The Dublin hallmarks are clearly stamped to the central shank and as typical for Irish pieces from this period lacks a date letter, however the 1770's fit in with the working period of the maker and would be expected for a marrow scoop of this form. A fabulous piece that remains in excellent condition with a fine, antique patina.
