Table Spoon - Celtic Point; Bright-cut Engraved - Cork circa 1790 by John Nicholson - 25cm long; 74g - HC/4556a

This is a fabulous example of a late 18th century Irish provincial silver table spoon made in the city of Cork by John Nicholson.

This 10" long spoon is attractively decorated with bright-cut engraving along its Celtic Point handle and bears an original script engraved monogram. Irish table spoons of this period are typically longer than their English counterparts and are often considered to be for serving purposes (as opposed to supping soup). The reverse side is clearly struck with two maker's marks and the diagnostic "STERLING" mark for the Irish provinces. This is an excellent example in fine condition.
