Sugar Tongs - Bright-cut Engraved with Acorn Bowls - London circa 1780 by Hester Bateman - 13.5cm long; 31g - FP/4627

These are a good looking pair of Georgian silver sugar tongs made by the great Hester Bateman.

The tongs are beautifully decorated with bright-cut engraving and feature one of Hester Bateman's trademark features - acorn-shaped grips. The decoration remains crisp, there are no personalised engravings (nor erasures) and the condition is excellent throughout.

The tongs are appropriately part marked with the lion passant and HB maker's mark. They can be accurately dated to circa 1780 as they lack the duty mark (added in 1784) and are typical of the style prevalent in the late 1770's/early 1780's.
