Taperstick - Harlequin - London 1754 by John Cafe - 13.5cm high,164g - KH/6460
This is a fabulous George II period silver taperstick in the form of a harlequin that is easily recognised by his diamond-patterned costume.
A harlequin was a popular mute pantomime character and in this taper stick design is holding the capital aloft in his two outstretched arms. He stands on a foliate base and the whole taperstick has been expertly cast with strong detail throughout. Made by John Cafe who was the most important specialist candlestick maker of the mid-18th century, this piece just exudes quality and is in excellent condition.
