1750 Pint Mug with Coat-of-arms

Sold
Pint Mug - Baluster - London 1750 by Thomas Whipham - 12.7cm (5") high; 8.9cm (3.5") diameter; 410g - CG/5827
This is a fabulous quality silver pint mug with a good hefty weight and in the highly popular baluster form. The engraving on this beer tankard is particularly fascinating as it features two extremely complex ciphers (almost impossible to decipher!) as a presentation from one to the other and a superb coat of arms to the front. The motto under the arms reads "QUIESCENS ET VIGILANS" - "resting & watchful" and the crest above depicts a running hound.
Thomas Whipham was a specialist hollowware maker from the mid-18th Century producing some of the finest pieces from this period. The mug is testament to that statement as it has a good hefty weight and feels superb in the hand. It is in wonderful, original condition and has a fine patina.
