Cake Basket - oval with swing handle and openwork skirt to base - London 1773 by James Young - 40cm x 33cm x 12cm high rim; 34cm high handle up; 1830g - TR/6247

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This outstanding quality George III silver basket has a shaped oval outline with pierced & embossed decoration around the sides. The opulent decoration consists of pierced slots & scrollwork with drapery festoons issuing from classical & grotesque masks. The swing handle is supported by two caryatids and has a foliate scroll cartouche to the centre which remains vacant. The base has a fantastic and most unusual openwork base with drapery festoons, scrolls & leafy scroll feet. The central field is engraved with an excellent coat of arms.

This is a very large basket and with a weight over 57 tr.oz., it has an extremely hefty weight in the hand. It would generally be termed as a "cake basket", and although perfect for breads and pastries, in reality this large basket could be used for a variety of functions to decorate a table or sideboard. This is a stunning quality piece of imposing Georgian silver that is in excellent condition.
