Early Openwork Caddy Spoon, 1775

Caddy Spoon - Openwork terminal with Trifurcated stem - London circa 1775 by George Smith - 8.6cm long; 15.1g - PT/9263
This is a fabulous spoon!
Dating prior to 1781, when the date letter was first added to London-made caddy spoons, this example is in the very rarely found type with an openwork handle. These silver caddy spoons would have been very costly to make at the time and of the relatively small numbers made, few examples have survived in as good condition as this one. Furthermore the handle of this spoon is cleverly engraved to enhance the appearance and the stem splits in to two side branches (known as trifurcating) as it approaches the junction with the elegantly-shaped bowl.
This Georgian silver spoon is clearly struck with the "GS" maker's mark of the spoonmaker George Smith and is in wonderful condition.
