Chocolate Pot - Tapering Cylindrical - London 1731 by Charles Martin - 24cm high; 900g - DS/6392

This is a superb George II silver chocolate pot made in London by Charles Martin.

On first appearance, it takes the form of the popular tapering cylindrical coffee pot that was prevalent in the 1720's and 30's, however on closer inspection it can be seen that the cover can be removed by way of a pin with handy tab and the top of the cover has a further hinged aperture. The extra hole in the top is provided for inserting a molinet for stirring the hot chocolate contents and the cover can be removed to allow easier cleaning of the interior.

This chocolate pot retains its original pear wood handle to protect the user from heat and has an acanthus-decorated cast spout. It has a good hefty weight of 27 tr.oz. and a wonderful feel in the hand. The expertly engraved coat-of-arms to one side creates an extra dimension of high quality and the M*G initials of the original owners to the underside adds a lovely personal touch.

The condition is superb with a fine, antique patina. Overall a first class piece of early 18th century silver.

Charles Martin had been apprenticed to the major maker of hollowware Thomas Teale in 1722.
