Exeter Silver Table Spoon, 1783 Thomas Eustace
£125.00
Table Spoon - Hanoverian pattern - Exeter 1783 by Thomas Eustace - 20.8cm long; 52g - BM/6103
This is an Exeter-made, bottom-struck silver table spoon by Thomas Eustace.
The vast majority of extant Exeter-made spoons are marked at the top of the reverse handle as opposed to bottom-struck (close to the bowl) as in this example. The change was made in the English provinces when the addition of the duty mark in 1784 made it impracticable to stamp five marks on the thin section of the stem. Dating from 1783, this spoon is as late as you will find a bottom-struck 18th century table spoon.
The spoon is in the Hanoverian pattern with a long strap heel and is engraved MH to the reverse terminal. It is in fine condition with a good, antique patina.
