Caddy Spoon - Bright-cut Engraved Front & Back - London 1785 by George Smith III - 8.5cm long - LE/6204

This is an oustanding George III period silver caddy spoon with engraved decoration to the front side and more unusually to the reverse side too. Caddy spoons with this form of decoration are rare and especially beautiful.

Made by the top silversmith George Smith III, this caddy spoon is a superb example of its type. The engraving to the front of the pointed handle includes a shield-shaped vacant cartouche. The decoration to the reverse covers the back of the bowl with a further vacant cartouche and extends around the edge of the handle as well. The condition is excellent and the appropriate London hallmarks include the scarce incuse duty mark and a part worn "GS" in script maker's mark.
