You don't find too many silver cream jugs pre-dating 1740 and so this example from 1738 is a good, early piece.

Cream jugs with three legs are usually termed as tripod form and by the 1740's they tended to be more elongated with a more pronounced pouring spout than this early pear-shaped, squatter version. The handle is engraved with an original "M+B" ownership initials in Roman block, whilst the slightly rubbed hallmarks are located to the underside and include the date letter "C" for 1738 and the maker's mark that begins with a "B" and is almost certainly followed by a "G" for Benjamin Godwin.

This early cream jug is in great condition, although there is a bubble to the inside above one of the legs almost certainly caused during manufacture when soldering the legs (see photo 4).
