Cream Jug - Tripod - Newcastle circa 1730 by Isaac Cookson - 9.5cm high; 137g - NR/6779

This is an extremely rare piece of early 18th century Newcastle-made silver.

This cream jug is in the earliest form that first appeared in London circa 1720 with provincial examples generally a little later in date. The distinctive IC maker's mark is the first mark entered by Isaac Cookson at the Newcastle assay office circa 1728.

The jug has a bulbous body, stands on three hoof feet and has a nice, chunky feel in the hand that is indicative of the high standards of the silversmith. There is original engraving to the lower side and a "H" to the top of the handle. Typically the Newcastle hallmarks do not include a date letter, but the form of jug and maker's mark clearly date the jug to the 1728 -1735 period.

This rare cream jug remains in excellent condition with neither damage nor repair and a good, antique patina.
