Early Keswick Silver Serving Spoon, 1897 KSIA
Sold
Serving Spoon - Knop Terminal - Birmingham 1897 by Keswick School of Industrial Art - 18.2cm long; 44g - LH/6893
This is a very early example of silver from the Keswick School of Industrial Arts (KSIA).
This good-sized, hand-made spoon has a large planished bowl with a long handle terminating in a knop. It is clearly marked to the stem with late Victorian Birmingham hallmarks and remains in fine condition.
Most of the KSIA productions prior to 1900 were designed by Harold Stabler with this spoon presumably inspired by the antique:
"By 1898 the school had over 100 pupils attending classes and full time craftsmen were employed to execute works to Stabler's designs" - extract from "The Loving Eye and Skilful Hand" by Ian Bruce.
