Duchess of Sutherland Silver Porringer, 1910 DSCG
Sold
Porringer - 2-handled - Birmingham 1910 by Millicent Sutherland (DSCG) - 9cm wide x 4.1cm high; 60g - OT/6961b
This is a great example and competitively priced piece of silver from the Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild.
It takes the form of a 2-handled bowl in the style of an early 18th century porringer (infant feeding vessel) with chased decoration. The full set of 1910 Birmingham hallmarks, including the Millicent Sutherland maker's mark, are clearly stamped to the side of the bowl and the D.S.C.G. surmounted by the coronet of a duke punched to the underside. The condition is excellent.
In 1900, Lady Millicent St.Clair-Erskine, Duchess of Sutherland began a guild for crippled children in Stoke-on-Trent to learn a craft and produce metalware in the arts & crafts style. This became the Duchess of Sutherland Cripples Guild and silverware produced by the guild bears both the "MS" maker's mark of the Duchess as well as the much sought after D.S.C.G surmounted by a ducal coronet stamp.
