Soup Plates (12) - Circular with Gadroon Mount - London 1874 by Beare Falcke - 25cm diameter; 8075g combined weight - CW/7031
This is an outstanding set of twelve silver dinner plates made for the Iraqi born business man and philanthropist Albert Sassoon.
The plates are circular in form and have a well detailed gadroon mount. They were made by Beare Falcke and are of the highest quality with a good, heavy weight. The border of each plate is engraved with the coat of arms, dove crest and motto of Albert Sassoon. The Latin motto reads: "Candide Et Constanter" (candidly and constantly).
Sir Albert Abdullah David Sassoon, 1st Baronet (1818-1896) was a businessman and philanthropist who headed the famous Jewish family trading firm of David Sassoon & Co. He was a major benefactor to the city of Mumbai and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in 1872. He settled in the UK in 1875 and undoubtedly, these plates were made to celebrate and furnish his new home.
