This handsome silver wine funnel stand was made in Edinburgh by James McKay around the end of the 18th century.
The stand is circular in form with a fine bead border and domed centre which is engraved with a spreading oak tree crest that is surmounted by a motto that reads: "Sub Tegmine" (under the cover of). This is the crest and motto of the Gordon Clan.
The wine funnel stand remains in excellent condition with crisp engraving. The underside is stamped with appropriate Edinburgh hallmarks for smallware of the period (i.e. no date letter).
