Wine Taster - Round with Coiled Handle - Guernsey circa 1770 by Pierre Maingy - 7.8cm diameter; 10cm wide incl. handle; 97g - YF/6784
Georgian period Channel Islands silver is relatively scarce, but this is the first time we have encountered a wine taster. This wine taster or tasse de vin (taste vin) is in the typical form of a French 18th century example with a serpent style looped handled, even down to the engraving of the original owner's name - no doubt as a result of Guernsey's close proximity to the continent. This wine taster has been made from a good gauge of silver and has a nice feel in the hand. The naively engraved name appears to be " F C Hinson" or "F Chinson"!
The underside of the piece is stamped multiple times with the "PM" mark for Pierre Maingy of Guernsey and it is in overall fine condition.
