Snuff Box - Gilt; Cast Scene of Venus - London 1810 by Phipps & Robinson - 9.5cm x 7cm; 178g - EQ/6390

This is a superb quality Regency period silver-gilt snuff box with cast scene to the top.

The cover of this good-sized, oval snuff box features a high relief mythical scene of Venus riding her chariot drawn by two stylised dolphins with cherubs in attendance. The sides and base are engine-turned and the whole piece retains it original gilding throughout.

This box is of the very highest quality with a good, strong hinge, a hefty weight of almost 6 tr.oz. and is typical of the cast scene table snuff boxes that were popular in the early decades of the 19th century. This example was made in the workshop of the premier silversmithing partnership of Thomas Phipps and Edward Robinson and bears a full set of London hallmarks. It is in excellent condition with a lovely, crisp scene.
