Boxed 97-piece Irish Bright Cut Star Pattern Silver Canteen of Cutlery, London 1981 by A Haviland-Nye

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a rare opportunity to purchase a beautifully presented boxed canteen in a very popular but hard-to-find pattern.

The service is in the elegant Bright-cut Star Pattern which was the quintessential flatware design of the 1780-1800 period in Ireland. Additionally, the box is of a far superior quality to the majority found from this period – note the dovetail joints at each corner.

The set provides for a full formal table service with ten pieces per 8 place settings, a set of six serving spoons, a five-piece carving set and an assortment of other serving knives/trowels.

Every piece is hallmarked for London 1981 and bears the sponsor’s mark of A Haviland-Nye. The service was supplied by The Silver Club which was based in Hatton Garden in London as illustrated by the plaque to the inside lid.

Celtic Point Bright-cut Star Pattern

Often known as Irish Star, this elegant flatware design was first designed and made in Ireland during the final decades of the 18th century. Bright-cutting was a form of engraving that required fine cutting of the silver at an angle to create a multi-facetted reflective surface so that the candle light of the era would provide a sparkling effect. The pointed end (rather than rounded) and the star motif to the terminal of each piece are distinctive and were uniquely Irish. Very few original 18th century services from Ireland in this pattern exist and so this is a great opportunity to buy a complete service of the design in a faithful, high quality 20th century reproduction.
