Bateman Nutmeg Grater, 1802

Sold
Nutmeg Grater - London 1802 by Peter, Ann & William Bateman - 4.5cm x 3cm x 2.5cm; 32g - FS/4190
Nutmeg graters made by the Bateman family are relatively scarce and this is a good example of such a box emanating from their workshop. The box is double hinged, which means that the top cover is opened to reveal the steel rasp and the grated spice accumulates underneath and can be gathered by opening the base. The top of the covers bears a good script engraved monogram "MAB" and the box is in fine condition throughout and bears clear hallmarks for the son, daughter-in-law and grandson of the famous Hester Bateman.
