Filigree is the ornamentation of objects with fine silver wire formed in to delicate intricacy. During the first decade of the 19th century Birmingham enjoyed an influx of a large group of specialist filigree makers from Italy. These immigrants worked their craft in the city with vigour and produced a wide variety of wonderful silver objects from caddy spoons to card cases, but rarely have we seen a patch box displaying the art so beautifully as this example does. Bearing the maker's mark "IT" for Joseph Taylor, this Georgian patch box would have been made in during the 1800 to 1810 period. The cover is superbly decorated with filigree and an applied central plate engraved with original script monogram. Furthermore, the base has a band of fine filigree work too. Filigree work is very delicate and a major bonus for this piece is that it remains in fabulous condition.
