42-Piece Acanthus Pattern Sterling Silver Canteen of Cutlery, London 1930/31 by Georg Jensen
The Service
This excellent 42-piece canteen of sterling silver flatware and cutlery is in one of the most sought after patterns of the 20th century, Georg Jensen’s Acanthus Pattern. The service provides for a standard place setting for six people.
The pieces were made by Georg Jensen and bear London import hallmarks for 1930/31 with importer initials for George Stockwell and the Georg Jensen workshop mark. The table knives are a little later in date and bear the Georg Jensen post-1945 marks to the handles. The stainless steel knife blades are engraved “Georg Jensen Copenhagen” (dessert-sized) or “Georg Jensen Denmark” (table-sized).
Acanthus Pattern
This pattern is also known by its Danish name of Dronning and shares many characteristics with Acorn pattern, the two being designed by Johan Rohde with Acanthus introduced in 1917. The handles have classical acanthus motifs surmounting the fluted column-like stems. The pattern has a lovely, cheerful feel that has inevitably lead to it become one of the most popular and highly sought after of all Jensen flatware patterns.
Georg Jensen
Georg Jensen was a Danish silversmith who opened his first silver workshop in 1904 in Copenhagen. He was to become the most renown maker of silverware in the World with shops in London, Paris, New York, Berlin and Stockholm. His company embraced the Art Deco movement of the 1920’s and 30’s and some of his most important patterns were designed during this period. Many of the Jensen flatware patterns have endured the test of time and remain highly popular today.
