36-piece Silver-Gilt Old English Feather Edge Pattern Dessert Canteen, London 1794/95

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an outstanding Georgian period silver-gilt 12 place settings dessert service in Old English Pattern.

All the pieces in this cutlery service were made in London in the mid-1790’s. During the 18th century, spoons and forks were made by specialist workshops and knives by other specialists, this is the case with this set where all but two forks were made in 1795 by Northcote and Bourne, and all the knives were made by a combination of the Tatum and Brent workshops who were specialist haft makers and had formerly been apprenticed to Dru Drury the famous early 18th century haft maker.

Each piece is beautifully decorated with a bright-cut engraved feather edging and the knives have additional ribbing to help grip. The quality is of the highest degree throughout. Every piece also bears an engraved crest depicting a harp with angel.

This is a truly wonderful set!

Old English Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern due to its elegant and simple form. Soon after its introduction, simple bright-cut engraved decoration was added as a variation with feather edging being the most popular.
