Canterbury Snuff Box, London 1846

Snuff Box - Rectangular with cast scroll border - London 1846 by Edward Edwards - 8.1cm x 5.3cm; 2.2cm high; 143g - UQ/3918
This is a fine quality silver snuff box in excellent condition. London made boxes from the Victorian period are relatively scarce in comparison to Birmingham boxes and this example was made by the leading specialist from the capital. The box has a good hefty weight and retains its original gilding to the interior. There is a cast scroll decorated mount around the top and twice around the sides. Both top and underside are similarly engine turned with the top having an engraved field to centre. This reads:-
"Presented to Mr William Paine
BY THE MEMBER OF
THE CANTERBURY BOOK SOCIETY
as a mark of personal esteem
and an acknowledgment of the assiduous
and satisfactory discharge of his duties
AS SECRETARY Jan 21st 1845"
The box is in excellent all round condition with clear hallmarks and feels lovely in the hand.
