James I Seal Top Spoon, 1618

Sold
Spoon - Seal top - London 1618 by Daniel Cary - 170mm long; 47g - Ref. No.: PE/2578
Daniel Cary was one of the finest and most prolific makers of silver spoons during the first half of the 17th century and this spoon is a great example of his output. The spoon has a typical cast seal terminal for the James I period with engraved initials to the flat end. There is a good fig-shaped bowl that bears the leopard's head crowned mark with the remaining three marks struck as usual to the lower end of the shank. The marks are in good order, although the lion passant was mis-struck and is off centre. This early spoon is in excellent condition with original patina.
