James Cluatt Seal Top Spoon, 1614

Sold
Spoon - Seal top - London 1614 by James Cluatt - 17cm long; 43g - AT/7772
This is a fine example of a James I period silver seal top spoon and was made by the specialist silver spoonmaker James Cluatt. It has a nicely decorated cast seal terminal with original "EN" ownership initials to the flat plate. The spoon has typical hexagonal stem and fig-shaped bowl and benefits from having a great set of hallmarks to the reverse of the stem and a slightly rubbed leopard's head crowned mark to the bowl. The spoon is in excellent condition with an unworn bowl.
James Cluatt was apprenticed to William Cawdell, the major spoonmaker of the late 16th/early 17th centuries and entered his mark in 1604.
