Mote Spoon - London circa 1745 by Edward Bennett - 14.5cm long - BL/3843
Dating from the George II period, this attractive looking silver mote spoon was most likely made by Edward Bennett (second initial part rubbed).
The spoon has an attractive crosslet and scroll pierced bowl and a long spike-shaped handle with mitre terminal. It is hallmarked in typical fashion with a lion passant and maker's mark. The spoon is in excellent condition.
Mote spoons were used for skimming dust motes from the surface of a cup of tea (a common problem for tea drinkers at a time when the product was carried in wooden chests) and the long tapering, pointed stem was used to unblock teapot spouts.
