Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is an early example of a rare Gibson's Patent silver medicine spoon.

This Georgian spoon has a hollow handle to allow the user to control the quantity of medicine administered by placing a finger over the aperture. To the top of the bowl is an opening for loading the spoon that is then closed tightly over with a flush, hinged cover (you need sharp nails to open it!).

This type of spoon was invented in 1827 and is engraved "C Gibson Inventor 1 Bishopsgate St Within" to the collar of the handle. A full set of clear hallmarks are located inside the bowl.  The spoon is in fine condition with some very minor dings to the bowl - an excellent example of a much sought after spoon.

A Gibson Patent spoon is illustrated and discussed in "Silver Flatware" by Ian Pickford on page 208 figure 379.
