Silver Dog Nose Spoon with Armorial, 1702
£395.00
Table Spoon - Dog Nose Pattern - London 1702 by William Petley - 20cm long; 73g - TD/5692
This is a fine quality Queen Anne period silver table spoon in the Dog Nose pattern complete with engraved armorial to the front terminal.
With a hefty weight of 73 grams, this spoon is typical of the high quality one would expect from a wealthy aristocratic background. The armorial features a lion rampant within a shield and is surmounted by a lion rampant erased crest.
Dating from the early years of the 18th century, the Britannia standard hallmarks stamped to the reverse stem are nice and clear and feature the script "PE" maker's mark surmounted by a crown for the specialist spoonmaker William Petley. This maker had been apprenticed in 1692 to William Matthew who was another specialist London-based spoonmaker.
This top quality spoon is in fine condition with a strong rattail, unworn bowl and nice patina.
