Marrow Spoon - Shell-back - London 1744 by Samuel Roby - 22cm long; 51g - ZH/2331

Silver marrow spoons are the rarer cousin of the double-ended marrow scoop with its narrow bowl used to tease out the tasty morsels from marrowfat bones and the standard table spoon-sized bowl for eating.

The shell motif to the reverse of the bowl stands this example out from more typical examples and its small rudimentary scallop form is typical of the 1740's. This is an excellent example of a marrow spoon that remains in fine condition with clear London hallmarks for Samuel Roby.

Samuel Roby was a spoonmaker of the early 1740's from a long line of specialists with his master being William Soame and before that Samuel Hitchcock.
