Scottish Provincial Silver Quaich, Inverness 1800
Sold
Quaich - 2-handled - Inverness circa 1800 by Alexander Stewart - 12.3cm wide; 7.6cm diameter; 77g - BK/2825
This is an extremely rare Scottish silver quaich made in the provincial town of Inverness by Alexander Stewart circa 1800.
Taking the usual form with a circular bowl and two lug handles, this good-sized quaich has clear "INS" for Inverness and "A.S" maker's mark to the underside, in addition to two "A"'s. A pair of engraved initials are located to the top of both handles, suggesting this quaich was aptly given as a wedding present. The condition is excellent with nothing negative to report.
A quaich is an ancient Scottish drinking vessel traditionally used to drink whisky and often passed between two people with both holding the handles and taking a sup from opposite sides of the bowl.
