38 piece Pine Pattern Half Canteen, London 1935/6

We are pleased to be offering an excellent quality Art Deco style silver canteen in the much sought after Pine Pattern. This service comprises six pieces for 6 place settings, together with a pair of sauce ladles.

As with all Pine Pattern, the silver spoons and forks were made by Roberts & Belk, but this set also bears the London hallmarks of the top retailers Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Limited and as they include the date letter for 1935/6 they must be amongst the very first to have been produced for the general public. In addition to the hallmarks, they carry the registration design number 798068 and the Aladdin's Lamp trademark of Roberts & Belk.

The forks are 3-pronged and all the pieces within this service are in fabulous polished condition with a good solid feel and balance in the hand. The knives have Art Deco shaped imitation bone handles and stainless steel blades. The knives are still in their original paper slips and have probably never been used.

Pine Pattern

Pine Pattern is the quintessential Art Deco pattern and was originally designed for the most important ocean liner of the 1930's.

In 1934 the White Star-Cunard liner, the 'RMS Queen Mary' was launched. It was to spend the next two years being fitted out in readiness for its maiden voyage to New York in 1936. For their new 'Pride of the Fleet' ship, White Star-Cunard commissioned Elkington & Co.to supply the flatware and cutlery for the first class section and Roberts & Belk for the second class section. Walter Belk's design was said to have been so popular with the passengers on the maiden voyage, that White Star-Cunard wired Roberts & Belk from New York with another order, said to represent 50% of the original order, for delivery when the ship returned to Southampton, as thousands of pieces had gone missing from the ship's stock! The pattern was put on sale to the public in 1936, no doubt much to the relief of White Star-Cunard. (credit http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=23720
