Basting Spoons (pair) - Old English Pattern - Edinburgh 1786 by Robert Gray - 31.5cm long; 190g combined weight - RA/5517

These are a lovely pair of Scottish silver stuffing spoons (aka basting, gravy or long-handled serving spoons).

The spoons are in the very elegant Old Engish pattern and benefit from having neither personalised engravings nor erasures. Furthermore, they retain their thick bowl tips and are in fine condition throughout with a lovely antique patina.

These 12.4" long spoons were made by Robert Gray of Glasgow who was probably the most important Scottish silversmith of the late 18th and early 19th centuries and who finally won in 1820 his long fought battle to have an assay office installed within the city of Glasgow.

A further bonus for these spoons are the clear sets of Edinburgh hallmarks that include the newly introduced duty mark in its early incuse form.
