Runcible Spoon - Laurel Pattern - Birmingham 1924 by Elkington & Co. - 13.7cm long; 30g - CM/7967a

Popularised by the nonsense rhyme "The Owl & The Pussy Cat", this is a good example of a silver runcible spoon.

The spoon features a spork style bowl that makes it ideal for serving chutneys and pickles. It was made by the important silver manufacturers Elkington & Co in one of their registered flatware patterns featuring a laurel wreath to the terminal. The design number Rd571195 shows that the pattern was registered in 1910 and the Birmingham hallmarks date this piece to 1924.

The spoon is in lovely polished condition with an original script monogram to the terminal.

The runcible spoon appears in two works by Edward Lear: The Owl & The Pussy Cat ("They dined on mince and slices of quince, which they ate with a runcible spoon") and Twenty-Six Nonsense Rhymes and Pictures ("The Dolomphious Duck, who caught Spotted Frogs for her dinner with a Runcible Spoon").
