Newcastle Quart Tankard, 1794

This handsome Georgian period silver quart tankard was made by the most important 18th century Newcastle-based silversmiths, John Langlands and John Robertson. It has a stylish straight sided tapering cylindrical form with central girdle. Certain features of this fine piece raise it above the standard examples - just look at the quality of the hinge and openwork scroll thumbpiece. The S-shaped handle terminates in an attractive heart and is no doubt related to the betrothal engravings "H" over "EF" also located on the handle. 

This fabulous silver tankard has a good hefty weight and is in fine condition throughout with the bonus of the main body being free from personalised engravings. The underside of the skirt base displays a full set of Newcastle marks and the maker's mark is located on the side of the body, top of the cover and on the handle.
