Wine Label - Mountain; Chased Escutcheon - London circa 1756 by Sandilands Drinkwater - 5.5cm x 3.5cm; 11g - BX/1478
This is a fine example of an escutcheon-shaped wine label with chased vine decoration made by the highly sought after silversmith, Sandylands Drinkwater. The label is named with the scarce Mountain name and bears two marks to the reverse: lion passant (post 1755) and the "SD" maker's mark. The combination of the marks helps date the label to the latter part of Drinkwater's working life.
Mountain is a sweet dessert wine from the hills around Malaga in Spain and was the predecessor of Sherry in the UK, being replaced by the latter c.1790.
