Wine Label - Mountain; Engraved escutcheon - London circa 1745 by James Slater - 4.8cm x 3cm - MF/4415a

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is an early wine label by James Slater with the scarce "MOUNTAIN" name. The label has good, crisp and original vine and grape engraving around the border. The flat top edge is a variant of the main escutcheon design and was often used by Slater (see Wine Label Journal. Autumn 2014 p394). The reverse side has been crudely finished. The maker's mark is partly worn, but is Slater's second mark used between 1739-56. This is a rare label and good value for money.

Mountain is a sweet dessert wine from the hills around Malaga in Spain and was the predecessor of Sherry in the UK, being replaced by the latter c.1790.
