These are a remarkable pair of tea bowls and saucers made by the specialist miniature-maker, David Clayton.

Dating from the George I periods, these two cups and saucers have survived together for 300 years and in excellent condition. Each piece bears the "DC" in Gothic Script maker's mark of Clayton. This was the period that tea drinking first became fashionable in England and tea bowls (as opposed to tea cups with handles) were the normal drinking vessel.

Identical tea cups and saucers can be seen in figure 207 and figure 218 in "Miniature Silver Toys" by Victor Houart and figure 82 in "Silver Toys and Miniatures" by Miranda Poliakoff.
