Spoon - Trefid - Lewes circa 1675 by Richard Dobson - 18.2cm long; 42g - CC/8936

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a fine example of a late Charles II period silver trefid spoon made in Sussex. The spoon has a lovely feel in the hand and has a deep rounded bowl with rattail to reverse. The reverse terminal is engraved with original "AF" initials and has a nicely shaped trefid terminal. The spoon is in very fine, original condition with a good unworn bowl.

The spoon is marked four times to the reverse of the stem; three times with a mark showing the town arms of Lewes and a fourth incuse "W" over "D" mark that relates to Richard's father William Dodson who was a spoonmaker in the town throughout the early 17th century. All the marks were struck with a punch that had been in use for many years by his father before him and had subsequently lost detail (see page 24 and figure 58 in "Sussex Silver" by Tim Kent).
