Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a superb quality, arts & crafts silver spoon made by George Edward Hunt and assayed in Chester.

This large spoon follows the form of a 16th century seal top spoon with a sustantial cast, seal terminal and a generous, fig-shaped bowl. It is been expertly hand-made and bears the original planishing (spot-hammer) marks to the bowl that evidence the hand-wrought nature of the spoon. In addition to the deeply struck Chester hallmarks, the back of the stem is engraved in Latin: "SPES MEA CHRISTUS" which translates to "Christ is my hope".

This spectacular George V period spoon remains in superb condition.

George Edward Hunt (maker's mark "GH" in shield-shaped punch) was taught by Bernard Cuzner of Liberty & Co fame and had a workshop at 10 Bull Street, Harborne, Birmingham during the 1920's and 30's. He specialised in arts and crafts jewellery and his small production of silver pieces rarely come to market; we are fortunate to currently have a small collection of his work in stock. George Hunt was deaf from the age of five and an exhibition of his work was showcased by Bonhams in "The Silent World of an Arts & Crafts Jeweller" in 2006.
