Spoon - Trefid; Laceback - London 1691 by Lawrence Coles - 19.7cm long; 59g - CE/6598
This is a fabulous quality example of a London-made silver laceback trefid spoon made by the important maker Lawrence Coles.
This good-sized table spoon has raised laceback decoration to both the front of the handle and back of the bowl. Original engraved betrothal initials are located to the reverse terminal. This is a fine example of this type of spoon with good decoration and addiitonal "ears" within the trefid terminal. The condition is excellent with a full, unworn bowl and a great, antique patina.
The spoon is stamped with an excellent set of London hallmarks for 1691 and include the maker's mark for the highly regarded spoonmaker Lawrence Coles who was integral to a long line of spoonmakers that included his master John Smith and his apprentices which included Thomas Sadler, Thomas Issod and William Swadling.
