Sugar Basket - NAvette-shape with Swing Handle - Cork circa 1790 by John Warner - 16cm long; 11cm wide; 19cm high (handle up); 254g - UB/6369
This is a superb example of a rare Cork-made silver sugar basket.
The basket has a stylish navette shape, stands on a pedestal foot and has a reeded, swing handle for carrying. It is beautifully engraved with floral swags and has two shield-shaped cartouches complete with original family crest and script initials.
This large Irish provincial basket was likely used for sugar or sweet meats and was made in Cork by John Warner in the final years of the 18th century. It is clearly marked "STERLG" and "IW" (incuse) to the underside. It is in excellent condition with nothing negative to report.
