This good looking silver MADEIRA label was made by Hester Bateman, the "Queen of English Silversmiths".
The wine label is rectangular in form with cut-corners and a bright-cut engraved border. The reverse side is clearly stamped with the sought after "HB" maker's mark in cursive script, plus the lion passant and duty mark. The intaglio duty mark was introduced in 1786 and as Hester Bateman retired in 1790, this label must have been made during this four year period. The condition is excellent throughout.
