This is a rare piece! Hester Bateman is not noted for her production of mote spoons because her working years did not cross-over with their main period of manufacture which was from the early 18th century through to circa 1770 when caddy spoons replaced them as the conveyor of tea from caddy to pot. This mote spoon is a late example and will date from the mid-1770's.

This George III period mote spoon is simply pierced with crescents around three central roundels and a cross. It has a diamond-shaped point to the stem for unclogging blocked teapot spouts and bears a lion passant and the sought after HB in script maker's mark for the Queen of English Silversmiths.

This silver mote spoon is in excellent condition and a rare survivor from the Bateman workshop.
