This mote spoon has an attractively pierced bowl with the addition of engraved flourishes to the reverse side giving it a feeling of extra quality over its contemporaries. The pierced bowl was used for lifting motes or dust particles from cups of tea - a common occurrence when tea was transported in bulk within large wooden chests.
The spoon has a long tapering stem terminating in an oar-like finial used to clean out the blocked up spouts of teapots. Dating from circa 1750, it is clearly stamped with the distinctive lion passant used between 1739 and 1755 and bears the engraved "FC" initials of the original owner. It is in excellent condition throughout.
